Last week Readers completed a flow map with details to show plot sequencing as well as silent reading and conferencing.  Writers read and annotated O. Henry’s “The Gift of the Magi” and watched a short film depiction of the story.

This week Readers will:

  • develop a plot timeline 
  • find similarities and differences across texts and note them on a thinking map
  • determine different purposes of texts
  • complete Frayer models of Stanford vocabulary

Writers will:

  • begin immersion in editorial opinion text
  • explore author’s point of view
  • choose a topic for writing an editorial opinion piece

Last week Readers completed summaries of their silent reading, Frayer models of vocabulary words and cause and effect thinking maps.  Writers completed their final drafts of book reviews and practiced writing dialogue using cartoons and dialogue tags.

This week Readers will:

  • complete flow maps to determine chronological order
  • study character traits

Writers will:

  • read and annotate a short story

Last week Readers reviewed Freytag’s pyramid and determined their current book’s point on the plot line.  Readers also defined point of view in literature, reviewed types of point of view (1st, 2nd and 3rd person, omniscient and objective) and theorized how their books would differ if the point of view changed.  Writer’s continued research and rough draft of their book reviews and are almost ready for revision.

This week Readers will:

  • Use thinking maps to analyze cause and effect and chronological order in their books
  • Read and annotate a short story

Writers will:

  • Complete a book review, including research document, format template, rough and final drafts
  • Work on writing dialogue using cartoons and dialogue tags

week of 11-9

Last week Readers reviewed the six types of conflict and looked for examples of conflict in their current books.  They also read silently, answered prompts about conflict resolution, began a CBA diagnostic and went to the library to research book reviews.  Writers completed a tree map showing text evidence of conflict from their current books, completed the CBA diagnostic, worked on sentence structure and punctuation and completed a sentence stretching exercise.

This week Readers will:

  • read silently with an eye toward writer’s purpose, conflict, resolution, plot and character development
  • answer prompts regarding above
  • complete additional research for book review

Writers will:

  • Continue writing a book review by using the rubric, research and template documents
  • Complete a book review rough draft and revision
  • Continue working on sentence structure, spelling, punctuation and required format
