Week of 9-28

Friday, September 25th, 2009

Please note:  lesson plans are subject to change

Also please note that since Reader/Writer Workshop classes are often linked as to subject matter, I teach Reading 1st, 2nd and 6th periods (the first half) and Writing 4th, 5th and 7th periods.

Last week Readers continued to work on prefixes, roots and suffixes.  I have decided to put that unit aside for now and work on it again from time to time during the year.  They also began working on words that sound alike but are spelled differently and have different meanings (their, they’re, there; we’re, were, where) and how to use each correctly.  Writers practiced the writing process while writing memoirs.  Final drafts of memoirs were turned in.  I also received several boxes of new books for my classroom library and a new Smart Board.  These should be in use by next week.

This week Readers will:

  • Complete Lesson 2 of Wordly Wise vocabulary study
  • View the new books and check them out (NOTE:  if a student checks out a book, and loses it, he or she is responsible for replacing that book) - students will sign for the books they check out
  • Continue to write prompted Reading Responses in their journals
  • Begin reading at home and recording the pages they read
  • Continue to study sound-alike words as well as denotative/connotative word meanings
